1972 BMW 3.0 CSi – ALPINA RECREATION

BACK

€ 135.000

Nut and Bolt restoration completed in 2020.

Electric windows, custom-fitted air-condition, ALPINA alloy wheels, front spoiler and steering wheel as well a fibreglass bonnet and boot lid.

This jaw-dropping CSi is finished in Fjord Metallic, one of the must-have period colours and perfectly suited to this beauty. The paintwork is first class having recently rolled out from a 3-year nut and bolt restoration. The chassis number is 2263971 and it has lived in Germany and Spain during its life. The condition of the car prior to full restoration was good and the resulting car is astonishing with good panel gaps and smooth straight flanks.

All of the chrome work has been addressed to ensure a 1st class finish, rubber seals replaced and glass crystal clear. The headlights are as new so too are the indicator lens and chrome work nestled onto the side of both front wings.

The theme continues underneath, equally clean and as good to look at as above with all components treated and rebuilt. Simply staggering and a worthy finish for such a successful touring car.

The interior in a BMW E9 coupe is like none other, beautifully laid out with lashings of wood trim makes the cockpit a wonderful place to be. Much like the exterior, the interior has been subject to the same immaculate attention no aspect has been left from attention inside this beauty. Everything benefiting from replacement has been with careful consideration and attention to ensure the original finish. Even the colour scheme has elegantly enhanced. Period correct electric blue BMW leather finished seats, are just a touch of luxury of its time. The perforated white headlining has been replaced with an exact copy as has the carpet, speckled in colour, more often than not just replaced. Exclusive black Alcantara all around the windows and dashboard covering rounds up the luxury finish. Factory door seals and window seals have all been renewed. The matching number 3.0L engine has been rebuilt, following recommendations of ALPINA Germany by AMAC Engineering in England, a BMW race engine specialist and Coast Classics in Spain, to ensure common integrity throughout the restoration. A 1986 M30 cylinder head was used and stripped out, the guides removed and the ports and throats roughed out. We used race engine specs 38mm inlet and a 39mm exhaust valves, all one piece 21-4/N race valves. Besides, a Cat Cams camshaft has been fitted. Every component attached has been stripped down and re-plated or replaced resulting in a “as-new” finish rarely seen on the CSi. Last but not least, a high-performance stainless-steel manifold and a stainless-steel exhaust kit, completes the project with a serious BHP increase up.

The gearbox was fully serviced, which becomes obvious when out on the road with a tight and positive shift.

We have fitted original ALPINA 18-inch wheels to give the car a bit of a modern touch. Wrapped in good rubber all round with plenty of tread the alloys hide revamped callipers, discs and pads all round.

All suspension components have been renewed with new shocks, ball joints and rubber bushes complimenting an incredible restoration and contributing to a tight and responsive drive as if it were new back in 1972.

First registered in 1972 chassis 2263971 has had some rough years in it´s life. It is to believe it belonged to just 5 owners over its 48 years. With a pile of invoices from BMW and other workshops, the current owner bought that beauty in May 2017 in San Sebastian, Spain. According to the seller, the BMW came to Spain from Germany in 2012, where it had already been partially restored. In Spain, the car was majorly used for classic car rallies and club outings.

After enjoying the BMW for some time, the owner decided to commission a Nut and Bolt restoration by Coast Classics. Once the overall specification, for the desired look has been decided, works started on full speed. As with most restorations of such magnitude, it did not take long to find out that this very special car suffered from previous rather unprofessional repairs or restorations. This not only stretched the time frame of the schedule restoration, but also increased the entire cost budget several times. One year of body works, was needed for the overall project. Hundreds of original parts needed to be sourced and exchanged. The list was long, actually very long. That included consultations at ALPINA Germany, who today don’t do any classic engines, nor that they have done CSi engines back in the day. However, we received some great advice, for all around the globe, such as sourcing parts for the sun-roof across the pond. The interior was done by a rewarded specialist and local partner of Coast Classics. It was for all involved a real challenge keeping up, but on the other hand a great enjoyment being part in such a magic project.

Spanish Historic registration.

We have a photographic album of over 3000 photos of the restoration from start to finish, showing the intense and lengthy effort that has been lavished on this historic BMW touring car.
